Stanford House, Stanford University

Stanford House opened its undergraduate centre in 1984, as an amalgamation of six historic properties on Oxford’s famous High Street. In 2015, the practice completed a thorough internal renovation of the property, retaining and enhancing the surviving historic features. This included upgrading the living accommodation for 48 students, refurbishment of the library, kitchens and shared amenities and ensuring DDA compliance for main circulation spaces. The addition of an elegant new garden pavilion provided multi-functional space for public lectures, recitals, art exhibitions and socialising.

"The panel praised the intelligent approach to the refurbishment of the existing houses and the attractive design of the new garden rooms. They particularly admired the incorporation of the existing wall in the new building and the way that the separate identity of the tenements had been retained."
