Planetarium and Observatory, Germany

A new planetarium and observatory was designed on the site of a 1930’s gas works in Germany. The competition brief asked that the existing gas storage sphere be retained in the design; creating a public exhibition space, café, shop, and seminar space alongside the planetarium and observatory. Einstein’s theory of relativity diagram inspired the design; a net distorted by a sphere, illustrating space and time being distorted by mass. An observation tower provides access to the sphere, affording excellent views of the sky. Inside the sphere, display spaces are wrapped around the planetarium to create a dramatic exhibition sequence.
