Library, Pembroke College, Oxford

An invited competition, we were asked to develop a new library scheme for Pembroke College. The current library, designed by the renowned architect Leslie Martin in 1974, was to be retained and expanded. Set within a tight site, our scheme sensitively built on the original building grid while creating a modern extension that provides - amongst other things - a new entrance, group working and study rooms, and a 20-seat lecture room. Natural ventilation and a green sedum roof increase the scheme's environmental credentials while natural building materials, such as stone, harmonise with the  College's historic context.
