Henry Welcome NMR, University of Birmingham

This unique laboratory facility is designed to house five Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectrometers, which are grouped around a centralised control area. Additional facilities include meeting, breakout and laboratory spaces plus amenities. Construction materials were selected for their longevity, zero ferrous content, thermal mass and environmental credentials. Externally, an exposed coffered concrete slab with cedar louvres and board cladding sit beneath a large over-sailing roof. The building is buried into its steeply sloping site to minimise visual impact and shield the public from harmful Gauss fields generated by the magnet chambers.
