Fellows Dining Hall and Kitchen, The Queen's College, Oxford

The Fellows’ Dining Hall was inserted into a double height gap between the original dining hall and the range of the college’s Back Quad, so that the external stone walls and classical features of the college were retained within the new interior. A full length roof light allows natural light into the hall while a suspended “barrel” ceiling gives the space a modern yet gracious feel. Under the Grade I listed building and adjacent Back Quad, a kitchen was excavated, with arches believed to have been designed by Hawksmoor, uncovered and incorporated into the design to create a dramatic architectural feature.
