We believe in the craft of making.

Our practice delivers inspiring architectural solutions to meet our clients’ needs and aspirations. Listening to our clients has taught us that it is only through intelligent discussion and an iterative, focused design process that profound needs are revealed, and a project is truly crafted. Taking this approach results in insights and ideas that capture subtleties and define solutions unique to every situation.

We are passionate about architecture as a complete process with a belief in the craft of making architecture. Our investment of time and the depth of our creativity in refining the design response becomes evident as we unveil the quality and efficiency of our finished products.

Our architectural responses come from a sense of place. This includes, not just its history, physical and environmental contexts but also its potential. This is then combined with our respected design skills and close working relationships with our clients to deliver inspiring and deliverable solutions.

This sensitive and considered approach has seen us successfully deliver a wide range of projects accross a number of sectors. As a result, many of these have led us to be recognised as experts in the re-imagining and re-purposing of existing buildings. From Scheduled Ancient Monuments to 1960’s teaching buildings we have mastered the skills needed to successfully breathe new life into such buildings.

We use today’s technology to craft solutions that respond uniquely to their individual settings. In this way, we work closely with our clients, consultants and collaborators to ensure we deliver great places that respect their setting and provide spaces in which people can thrive.

Our greatest asset to delivering wonderful solutions for our clients is our experienced team. They are all committed to delivering an excellent, comprehensive service and producing beautiful, innovative solutions that really work for their users.

To achieve this, we embrace new technology. All our projects use Building Information Modeling (BIM) as a default. This enormously aids understanding and coordination of those who come together to realise a building.

Traditional methods, such as sketch drawings and model making, are used to test and explore design ideas. This combination of approaches allows us to scrutinise designs from many different angles resulting in the delivery of well considered and beautifully resolved solutions.

"Their work for the college has shown a remarkable sensitivity of the specific needs of the institution and to its existing architecture, and a pragmatic, flexible willingness to adapt to the College's requirements. The results have been universally acclaimed as a triumph."

Former President, Wolfson College, Oxford

Careful planning and monitoring of our processes from the earliest design ideas, to manufacturing and construction, reduces the risks associated with delivering a building. We methodically produce and carefully research solutions, refining them via our thorough design process. We also ensure that these engineered and calibrated designs achieve their technical and functional purpose, whilst adding beauty to the solution.

We recognise that each brief’s unique functional, technical and environmental requirements merit bespoke designs, fitting the project with simplicity and elegance. This process provides not just a personalised solution for our clients but one that is delivered with economy and value.

BGS Architects is a second-generation practice that has built on the strong reputation secured by the founding partners.

Established in 1996 by Alan Berman and Roger Stretton, Berman Guedes Stretton Architects quickly forged a reputation of delivering high quality and well considered architectural solutions.

Over the next few years the practice grew, employing staff from well-respected national architectural practices. This further galvanised the practices reputation establishing it as a key practice in the regions.

In 2012, the two founding partners retired handing on the practice to a group of new directors who continue to lead the practice forward today.
