BGS Architects are delighted to have been appointed by Oxford Brookes University, to design Phase 2 of the Sinclair Building Refurbishment for the Department of Health and Life Sciences.

BGS have been working with OBU on the Sinclair Refurbishment Phase 1 since early 2015, in a team with Turner & Townsend and Arups. The first phase was to refurbish Levels 1 and 2 of the occupied teaching and research building, including the redevelopment of the Sinclair Annexe with Labs and a Microscopy Suite, and to overclad the entire building.

Phase 2 is the continuation of these works with the refurbishment of the remaining three floors of the building.

The Phase 1 works were started on site with EG Carter in 2016, with the Annexe the first section to be handed over in the September 2016. The second floor (comprising the second section of works) has been handed over at the start of March 2017, and the scaffolding is starting to be removed, revealing the new external façade. The third section of works will commence shortly following the departmental decant of the first floor.

Many of the challenges have been due to the requirements of working within, around and overcladding an existing building, which has remained in use throughout the project. This has required careful planning and communication with academics, staff and students.

It is planned for the second phase to be tendered in Q2 2017, with works to commence in September 2017.
