After graduation in 1971, Alan joined the pioneering practice of Maguire & Murray Architects. He set up his own practice in London in 1984 with Guedes and later moved to Oxford where he expanded the practice into Berman Guedes Stretton in 1996.
During his career, Alan has had responsibility for small, as well as multi-million pound projects. He has developed a wide range of skills, from those required to analyze complex briefs, develop detailed project specifications and manage consultants, to areas such as feasibility analysis, space audit and planning, and site studies. A focus of Alan’s work is on realistic building strategies that ensure that economy and practicality are not sacrificed to imaginative design. He is also actively concerned with sustainability issues, including energy conservation, environmental impact and waste management.
Alan has lectured, part-time, at Oxford Brookes University School of Architecture and the University of East London. He is the author of several books on design and sustainability, chairman of Artweeks, and a board member of Oxford Inspires.
Bruce joined Berman Guedes Stretton from RMJM London in 1998. He became an Associate Director in 2001 and Director in 2003. He is an active team builder, encouraging optimum results from all participants in the construction process. His strong design skills and ability to solve problems ensure that project potential is always maximized.
Bruce has developed a keen interest in planning and has contributed to the negotiation of a number of valuable permissions on behalf of clients. This has been achieved by identifying a clear strategy, maintaining good communication with authorities and demonstrating that buildings have been designed appropriately through clear and attractive documentation.
Bruce has particular experience in running complex commercial, residential and university projects. He has undertaken major projects for the Universities of Oxford and Warwick and has been responsible for several specialist leisure projects.
Marion qualified and joined Alan Berman in 1998, becoming an Associate Director of Berman Guedes Stretton in 2001. She is a highly experienced site project architect and pays particular attention to quality control issues. In addition to her technical design skills and attention to detail, Marion has considerable expertise in sustainable design solutions, and in a wide range of CAD and associated computer software. Marion is responsible for the practice’s quality management system BS EN ISO 9001.
Marion has extensive experience in working with listed buildings for both private and commercial clients. She has also worked with housing associations, and on healthcare projects, including the design of three wildlife hospitals for the RSPCA. More recent among Marion’s Oxford projects are the new MCR for St John's College and the library at Rhodes House.
Following his graduation from the Mackintosh, Hamish worked and studied in Edinburgh, Montpelier and San Francisco. He has much experience of briefing, managing academic clients and organizing complex strategic and technical requirements.
Since joining BGS in 1999, he has developed an interest in scientific research buildings such as the extension to the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine, resulting in collaboration with the MRC Human Immunology Unit to design a mobile AIDS Laboratory for Sub-Saharan Africa, short listed in an international design competition.
Hamish is also interested in the challenges presented by inserting new structures into Listed and Historic Buildings. This follows his dissertation which was a computer model exploring the historic fabric and architectural possibilities of the Sir John Soane Museum in Lincoln’s Inn Fields. He has developed successful proposals for projects, such as the feasibility studies for the Bodleian Library and Oxford Town Hall and a new Kitchen and Dining facilities in the Grade 1 Listed buildings of Brasenose College, Oxford.
After graduation, James joined Edward Cullinan Architects where he was a Director for 8 years before moving to Oxford to join Berman Guedes Stretton in 2005. At Edward Cullinan Architects, James was project architect for a range of designs including the £58million Centre for Mathematical Sciences at the University of Cambridge and the £12million Gateway Building for the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh.
His past and current experience has allowed James to develop all the skills required to manage complex projects and teams at both the strategic and detailed level. He is passionate about the important role good architecture plays in clients’ plans. He also brings to his work a wealth of experience on sustainability issues. While at Berman Guedes Stretton James has been involved in a number of projects including designs for buildings in school and university settings.
James is a part-time lecturer at Oxford Brookes University.
Before joining Berman Guedes Stretton in 2001, Jason worked with Howes Allen Montgomery where he was involved in a variety of projects for university colleges in Oxford and the Oxford Diocese. He has extensive experience in listed building work, and is proficient in 3D modeling and other software applications. Since joining Berman Guedes Stretton he has worked on projects for the Universities of Warwick and Birmingham, as well as Oxford. Jason has a detailed knowledge of the Building Regulations with particular experience of accessibility issues.
Joelle graduated from the University of East London in 1990 and has worked in major London practices at Senior Architect and Associate level before moving to Oxford in 2004.
She has been responsible for projects up to £15 million, primarily in the health, education and housing sectors.
She has particular expertise in analysing and managing complex client requirements and is experienced in overseeing projects to completion, using both Design and Build and traditional procurement.
Joelle is a part-time lecturer at Oxford Brookes University.
Elisa obtained her Degree in Architecture at the University of Studies of Florence, Faculty of Architecture in 2006. She has spent the intervening time in Siena working towards her Italian professional exam and joins Berman Guedes Stretton bringing with her skills in design visualisation and drafting. Elisa will be collaborating in delivery of London Office projects.
After graduating, Nick joined Berman Guedes Stretton in August 2006. Nick's work experience is mainly in design and space planning of commercial offices, but at Berman Guedes Stretton his role is to support the Project Architects at the London office in all stages of the architectural process. Alongside his work with experienced architects at Berman Guedes Stretton, Nick studies part time for the Diploma in Architecture to complete the academic portion of his architectural training.
Alicja joined Berman Guedes Stretton in November 2007 having completed her Diploma in Architecture at Poznan University of Technology; Poland. She has also spent time at Vitus Bering University College, in Horsens, Denmark as a Socrates-Erasmus student. She has worked in Poland developing her skills in design detailing and joins Berman Guedes Stretton to assist in the delivery of projects in the London Office
Jon joined Berman Guedes Stretton in 2000 after graduation. Initially focusing on 3D visualization, planning and presentation work, he has now built up considerable technical, on-site and job running experience. His recent work has included office, educational, commercial and domestic projects, and he has also developed a particular expertise in historic building work and laboratory design. Recently completed projects include the renovation of Grade II listed buildings, and new geochemistry laboratories for Oxford University.
Peter graduated from the University of Cape Town with Bachelor of Architecture and Bachelor of Architectural Studies degrees (with distinction). He completed his professional registration exams at Southbank University, London. He has worked at several London practices including Michael Hopkins and Partners, and most recently as an associate with a medium sized practice before relocating to Oxford.
Peter is interested in both environmental and social sustainability, and is a founding member of Architecture Sans Frontieres UK, which provides ways for architects to gain the appropriate additional skills to work effectively in international development roles, enabling vulnerable people to improve their living conditions around the world. Peter has worked on a wide range of projects, both new build and refurbishment, ranging in size from £3million to over £100 million, including the award winning Wellcome Trust Headquarters building. His experience covers a range of sectors including housing, leisure, retail and commercial projects.
Rebecca joined Berman Guedes Stretton in 2006 after graduating with the Les Townsend Memorial prize for the highest performance in Environmental Science and Technology. Working as an architectural assistant in her placement year, she has mainly worked in support of the refurbishment of university buildings in Oxford.
Patrick joined Berman Guedes Stretton in 2006, and is studying for a BA in Architecture. Patrick has 10 Years experience in the IT industry, where he has worked with architects, structural engineers and building contractors.
Natalie’s degree is in interior design, and her plan is now to qualify in architecture. Most of her work is on the Adobe Suite Programs, preparing graphic presentations, as well as on CAD work.
After graduation, Matt joined Berman Guedes Stretton in 2006. Since then he has worked on a wide range of projects, most notably a major conversion to create a hotel and conference facility. As an Architectural Assistant, Matt´s work is varied - he may be responsible for the day to day running of a job or for the production of drawings, and he is increasingly involved with production information.
Anna´s qualifications are in interior architecture, and her plan is to complete an MA in architecture. Anna´s responsibilities include 3D views, graphic presentation and general CAD work.
Stephen joined Berman Guedes Stretton in 2005, after graduating with a commendation in graphical presentation. He has a keen interest in community development, participating in building and educational programs in Oxford, Chile and Tajikistan.
Stephen’s presentation skills have played an important part in winning a number of architectural competitions. He is working on projects in the commercial, residential and educational sectors.
Pru joined Berman Guedes Stretton in 2004 as Business Manager. She is responsible for all aspects of company administration, including human resources, and financial and general management. Pru has previously worked with the University and for publishers in Oxford, as well as working for 20 years at the British Medical Association in both their London and Oxford offices.
As well as overseeing all administrative support for the practice, Kim has responsibility for bookkeeping. She also helps to organise CPD events and office meetings.
Matthias joined BGS in October 2007 after completing his MSc Arch at Wuppertal University in 2007, from where he also graduated as Dipl-Ing Arch in 2006. Before joining BGS he worked at the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy, and with Professor Mandler Architects in Cologne.
Before joining Berman Guedes Stretton in 2000, Chris worked as a qualified architectural technician, including a period with the conservation practice Purcell, Miller, Tritton & Partners. He has gained experience in managing project teams on a variety of projects, particularly in conservation work and sustainable technologies. He enjoys challenging and complex design issues and has excellent working knowledge of detailing and materials.
He has been responsible for projects ranging in value from £1 million to £10 million. During his career, Chris has worked on many prestigious projects, including work at the National Gallery, Courtauld Institute, and Ely Cathedral. More recent projects include work for West Oxfordshire District Council Offices and Imperial College, London.
Chris has strength in communication skills, in organizing complex strategic and technical requirements and in project co-ordination. He has particular skills in IT design and presentation, including CAD management, web design, and other creative software.
Following qualification, Gary joined Michael Hopkins and Partners in London. In 2002, he joined Berman Guedes Stretton as a Senior Architect responsible for projects at Birmingham University. He is highly experienced in managing large teams in a wide variety of projects, and has a reputation for delivering considered design through the knowledge he has accumulated of detailing and materials. In addition to his current involvement in science-based projects, Gary also has considerable design-led experience in the office and higher education sectors.
Gary brings to the practice considerable experience from his background of work on projects ranging in value from £2 million to £150 million, including award-winning projects such as the recent Parliament building - Portcullis House, Westminster and Evalina Childrens Hospital, a new freestanding children’s hospital on St Thomas’s Hospital site in London.
Gary is a part-time lecturer and external critic at Oxford Brookes University.
Natalie joined Berman Guedes Stretton in 2007 and provides administrative support throughout the practice. She previously worked as PA for an executive coaching company in Oxford.
After graduating from Oxford Brookes University with the Charles Webster award for construction, Phil joined Berman Guedes Stretton in 2007. Phil mostly works creating 3D models, presentation drawings and CAD.
Simon joined Berman Guedes Stretton in 2007 having graduated from the University of Portsmouth with a degree in Architecture. His responsibilities so far include CAD work and 3D modelling on a major scheme. He intends to study for a diploma in Architecture having gained experience at BGS.
Mojdeh Joined BGS in August 2007 with previous experience in the Healthcare and Education sector. As an Architectural Assistant, Mojdeh’s work ranges from surveys, Design development, 3D and 2D visualisation, Planning and Building Regulation Applications to compiling Tender documents. She has a Masters in Vernacular Architecture and particular interest in Community Consultation work and Design in a cultural context.
Peggy has completed her BSC(Hons) in Architecture at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen and holds a Diploma in Interior Design from the Malaysian Intitute of Art in Kuala Lumpar. Having worked in Interior Design in her home country of Malaysia, Peggy has experience of working to exacting client briefs and to challenging time lines. Peggy is assisting the Project Architects in all aspects of design, detailing and execution of their London office projects.
After qualification, Roger worked with London Transport Architects, Canterbury City Council and Oxford Regional Health Authority before becoming principal architect for IDC Consultants. He set up his own practice in 1989, and joined Alan Berman to form Berman Guedes Stretton in 1996.
Roger is highly experienced in the design and co-ordination of complex laboratory projects and in refurbishment and conversion of listed and other buildings. He also has considerable expertise in managing framework agreements, brief writing, project management, construction detailing and technical specification. He has been involved in several multi-million pound projects for Universities across the UK.
Roger is a RIBA Part 3 external examiner in professional practice and has examined at the University of Portsmouth and at Oxford Brookes University.
