In November 2016, planning was approved for a new Welcome Centre for Canterbury Cathedral. The building will be located next to the Grade I listed Christ Church gate, the primary entrance to the Cathedral precinct, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Welcome Centre will include the Community Space, a multi-purpose education and recreation area, and an Interpretation Space, which will inform visitors about the Cathedral’s history, culture and life. New retail and ticketing facilities have also been sensitively included in the scheme. Great care has been given to the relationship between the new Welcome Centre and its context due to its prominent location.
