BGS Architects commenced refurbishment of the grade II* listed Grand Hotel in 2010. As an architectural practice, our aim was to save this iconic local landmark, which was on Historic England’s ‘at risk register’. With a focus on conservation and restoration, a large part of our work was overseeing repairs to the extensive stone façade. Other alterations included a substantial re-model of the courtyard, and the removal of the roof to re-build and create a sympathetic modern rooftop extension. With awards from the Victorian Society and Historic England for conservation, the retail and restaurant units were occupied in 2016 while the remainder of the 177 bedroom luxury hotel, complete with restored grand ballroom, hotel bars, restaurants and function rooms, aim to be completed by the hotel operator by 2019.
