Keble College Library Stacks
The design challenge was to introduce windows into Butterfield’s patterned brickwork to make a dark store into study areas. Using photomontage techniques we manipulated a number of Butterfield’s window designs to find a satisfactory fit. To maintain the traditional quality, glazing is fitted directly into the stone surround. Additional light is introduced through hidden rooflights.
Another challenge was to develop a controlled environment for the college´s valuable manuscript collection without the use of air conditioning for reasons of sustainability, cost and maintenance. The simple installation has proved effective throughout a full seasonal cycle. |
