Imperial College: NMR Facility
Extension to an existing Edwardian building to provide a cross-faculty Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) facility for researchers in chemistry and biological sciences.
The shielded NMR spectrometers, ranging from 600MHz to 800MHz frequencies, are housed within the existing building in a double height space. A chamber was constructed around the magnets using non-ferrous stainless steel detailing. One metre pits had to be excavated so that the critical gauss fields could be contained within the volume of the existing laboratories. A permanent lifting beam was constructed over the magnet pit so that the spectrometers could be easily maintained. Aluminium gantries and walkways provide access to the equipment at high level.
