University of Birmingham: Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Facility

This unique facility has been designed to house five Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectrometers ranging from 500MHz to 900MHz frequencies.

The building is buried into its steeply sloping site to minimise visual impact. The spectrometer chambers are grouped around a centralised control area with meeting, breakout and laboratory accommodation also provided.

Natural materials used in the construction have been selected for their longevity, zero ferrous content, thermal mass and environmental credentials. An exposed coffered concrete slab has been used with cedar louvres and board cladding beneath the oversailing roof at the building entrance.
