The Queen´s College: Lecture Theatre
A medieval garden inspired the contemporary yet sympathetic design for a new lecture theatre at Queen´s College in Oxford.
The new lecture theatre sits within the Nun´s Garden and uses ancient garden walls as an enclosure - thus preserving the medieval garden pattern. The stage, seating and bar areas are all conceived as a piece of furniture - free from the existing walls - allowing them to breathe.
A stone slate roof provides protection from the elements, with its oak soffit giving warmth to the space whilst controlling acoustics. A glazed end wall puts the speaker in a private garden. During performances the glazing can be screened using a combination of blinds and acoustic shutters.
