Imperial College: St Mary´s Campus Library
Sensitive interventions modernise and unite learning spaces within St Mary´s Campus Library. The library is located within St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington. The existing building was designed in 1931 in a classical style by the distinguished architect Sir Edwin Cooper R.A.
Proposals seek to re-configure and unite the library spaces to make the building more coherent and to accommodate e-learning. A new lightweight translucent corridor will link two wings of the building which were separated in the 1950s.

An interactive space sits in the centre of the double height ground floor library, with more intimate group study areas within the alcoves. The first floor reading gallery looks down into the main library with translucent glass fins used to reflect sound. A new steel and glass stair will link the two floors, with a reading settle designed under the half landing. All fittings for new shelving and computer workstations have been designed using Canadian oak to complement the existing library furniture. A displacement ventilation system will be hidden within the building fabric.
