The Grade II listed 1970s buildings designed by Howell, Killick, Partridge & Amis were refurbished to meet new demands in IT, audio visual, lighting, heating and cooling systems, and to provide teaching accommodation, offices and improved circulation space. A balance of careful restoration and new intervention was required to respect the original design intent.

The insertion of new services was a particular design challenge as the buildings have exposed brickwork and a concrete frame with low ceiling heights and little or no suspended ceilings. The original internal black and white colour scheme was reinstated and complimented by a limited palette of strong colours in other areas.
