Imperial College: The Queen´s Tower Room

The brief called for a refurbished multi-functional space on the ground floor of a 1960s building designed by Norman & Dawbarn to accommodate diverse functions including student lunches and clubs, formal college dinners, dance and music rehearsals, conferencing and exhibitions.

The interior design is visually minimal and calm: colour and life is provided by the visual connection to the Queen´s Lawn and the students occupying the space. Materials used include a solid oak timber floor, walnut veneered timber cladding to the columns and walls, recessed feature lighting in the ceiling, stainless steel skirtings and high performance glazing to Queen´s Lawn.

Sliding and folding acoustic screens allow the space to be subdivided into three individual rooms, which can be used simultaneously.

A World Food Court has been created and incorporates a ´theatre´ cooking space, where visitors can watch food being prepared with all the excitement and drama of a sophisticated restaurant.

All of the doors to the north side of the space have been concealed so that this side of the room appears to be a continuous panelled wall when in fact it hides access to the catering administration team, the kitchens, the store rooms and the acoustic screens.

All these functions create a quality of space commensurate to the ambitions of the College.
