Bodleian Library

A series of feasibility studies were commissioned by the Oxford University Estates Directorate to investigate various scenarios for the redevelopment of the New Bodleian Library in the centre of Oxford.

The listed building designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in the late 1930s contains a vast independent purpose-designed ten storey book-stack structure which is restrictive and a fire risk.

Various approaches for upgrading or demolishing this existing structure and completely re-building within the central volume were considered, together with the sensitive refurbishment of the perimeter buildings to form new reading rooms and ancillary accommodation.
